The Bolivarian Constitution of Venezuela establishes the right of all Venezuelans to receive free education and lays down that such education that is provided by the official institutions will be free at all levels. However, the law can establish exceptions regarding special and higher education.
The Venezuelan educational system includes levels and types:
Levels: Nursery school, primary school, middle school (technical and professional) and higher education.
Types: Special education, aesthetic education and artistic formation, military education, adult education, religious education for ministers and after-school education.
Each of these levels and types has its own purpose and follows precise principles and guidelines.
The school year starts the second week in September and ends in the middle of July. Christmas and New Year holidays are between the 15th of December and the 7th of January. This calendar varies at university level since this level can be organized on a quarterly, bi-annual or annual system.
The current marking system in Venezuela is based on marks from 0 to 20, 10 being the pass mark.

Nowadays, there are approximately 120 public and private academic institutions, with many centres at a national level which offer courses in higher education. These educational centres include universities, institutes, university level schools and polytechnics.
The courses they offer can be split into eight areas:

The Venezuelan institutions award titles at the following levels: mid-level and advance technical qualifications, degrees, specializations, masters and doctorates.
